  2.              GNET: an Archive and Electronic Journal

  4.                  Toward a *Truly* Global Network
  5.  
  6.    Computer-mediated communication networks are growing rapidly, yet
  7.    they are not truly global -- they are concentrated in affluent
  8.    parts of North America, Western Europe, and parts of Asia.
  9.  
  10.    GNET is an archive/journal for documents pertaining to the effort
  11.    to bring the net to lesser-developed nations and the poorer parts
  12.    of developed nations.  (Net access is better in many "third
  13.    world" schools than in South-Central Los Angeles).  GNET consists
  14.    of two parts, an archive directory and a moderated discussion.

  16.    Archived documents are available by anonymous ftp from the
  17.    directory global_net at dhvx20.csudh.edu (155.135.1.1).  To
  18.    conserve bandwidth, the archive contains an abstract of each
  19.    document, as well as the full document.  (Those without ftp
  20.    access can contact me for instructions on mail-based retrieval).

  22.    In addition to the archive, there is a moderated GNET discussion
  23.    list.  The list is limited to discussion of the documents in the
  24.    archive.  It is hoped that document authors will follow this
  25.    discussion, and update their documents accordingly.  If this
  26.    happens, the archive will become a dynamic journal.  Monthly
  27.    mailings will list new papers added to the archive.

  29.    We wish broad participation, with papers from nuts-and-bolts to
  30.    visionary.  Suitable topics include, but are not restricted to:

  32.       descriptions of networks and projects
  33.       host and user hardware and software
  34.       connection options and protocols
  35.       current and proposed applications
  36.       education using the global net
  37.       user and system administrator training
  38.       social, political or spriritual impact
  39.       economic and environmental impact
  40.       politics and funding
  41.       free speech, security and privacy
  42.       directories of people and resources
